Level 3 Communications
Level 3 Communications, operator of one of the world's most significant IP fiber-optic networks, will cut up to 600 positions at its headquarters in Broomfield, Colorado. The cuts, which represent about 12 percent of the Level 3 workforce, are designed to accelerate the company's cash position. The decline in dial-up services that has resulted from the increased availability of broadband services has hurt Level 3.

Teradyne, Inc.
The world's largest provider of semiconductor test systems says it will eliminate 320 jobs as it closes a manufacturing facility. Teradyne will close a plant in the San Diego suburb of Poway, California by the end of the first quarter. The Boston-based company says the decision is part of a restructuring effort and will affect workers in two areas: a connection systems division and an assembly test division.

WestPoint Stevens Inc.
WestPoint Stevens, one of the leading manufacturers of bed linens and towels in the country, will be eliminating almost 2,500 hundred jobs, about 21 percent of its workforce. The company says it has decided to close five of its 24 U.S. plants as a direct result of the end of U.S. quotas on imports from low-wage countries. WestPoint Stevens says it will source a significant amount of production from other companies.

Oracle Corporation
The other shoe dropped this week. Oracle Corporation, which had been expected to announce layoffs after last month's merger with Peoplesoft was finally completed, says it will cut about 5,000 jobs, 9 percent of the combined workforce of the two enterprise software companies. Oracle says the majority of the employees that will be cut will receive notification within the next 10 days.

Enterasys Networks
A continuing effort to cut corporate costs is behind the decision by Enterasys executives to cut 115 jobs. The Massachusetts networking company was one of several spun out of the breakup of Cabletron Systems; the job cuts, which will be completed by the end of the quarter, are expected to save the company $ 9.5 million.

The decline in the production of the Delta Rocket series is costing some employees of Boeing their jobs. The company says it will eliminate about 100 positions at a plant in Decatur, Alabama. Delta Series production has been less than expected because the demand for commercial satellite rockets has been slower than anticipated. 550 employees will remain in Decatur after the cuts.
